Podemos demands rectification and approval of all housing measures in a single decree: "The opposite of what needs to be done when one wants to solve the housing problem"

The leader of Podemos, Ione Belarra, has demanded that the Government rectify and approve all housing measures in a single decree, because taking two to Congress for their validation is, in her opinion, a 'trap' to contain the citizen mobilization that will not work.

In statements upon her arrival at the Congress plenary session this Tuesday, Belarra referred to the two housing decrees approved by the Council of Ministers and said that "divide and conquer will not work" this time. "It is evident that dividing the decree between one that has more chances of passing and one that will surely fall (the one on the automatic renewal of rental contracts) is a trap and has a single objective: to clean up the government's image and contain social mobilization," Belarra said.

In her opinion, these measures are "the opposite of what needs to be done when one wants to solve the housing problem" and she estimated that if the Executive had a real intention to do so, it would be willing to expropriate vulture funds and lower rental prices by law.

Belarra has not revealed her party's vote next Friday in the extraordinary plenary session convened in Congress to validate the decrees, but she has demanded that the Government rectify, 'listen to the mobilized people' and the Tenants' Union and present a single decree.

In the same vein, Compromís deputy Águeda Micó expressed her "disappointment" that there are two decrees and warned that there are things she likes and others she doesn't, such as the "benefits for landlords," so they will read the 'fine print' of the measures.

The union returns to the charge

The Tenants' Union has reacted to the Government's approval of two royal decrees on housing and has questioned that the measures have been divided into two texts. From the encampment set up in Puerta del Sol, their spokespersons have warned that they will maintain vigilance over the content of the norms and have demanded that no changes be introduced that distort their demands. "The more they divide, the more they will anger us," said Valeria Racu and Alicia del Río, who insisted that "all eyes are on the text." The spokespersons have demanded to know the content of the measures in detail before setting a definitive position and have warned that they will be attentive to the 'fine print'.

Furthermore, the union announces new mobilizations, therefore, the spokespersons have announced a national call for this weekend 'in all cities of the country', with the intention of extending the protests beyond Puerta del Sol. Faced with this situation, they have stated that “everyone is very scared” and have celebrated that “those who are trembling are them once and for all.”

During their intervention, the Tenants' Union has also linked its criticisms to the situation of the real estate market and has demanded a change in the housing model. “The true invaders are the investors, the real estate investors, the international investors who have long taken over our country,” they have stated. What happened in Madrid, they pointed out, 'will also happen' in squares, towns, neighborhoods, workplaces and homes in other parts of the country.
