Óscar Puente has responded with a barrage of messages to the offensive launched by the Popular Party after the conviction of David Sánchez. The Minister of Transport has focused his criticism on the political exploitation of the ruling and has directly pointed to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, whom he has accused of entrusting his arrival at Moncloa to the judicial cases affecting the Prime Minister's inner circle.

The reaction comes after the PP leader presented the ruling of the Provincial Court of Badajoz as confirmation that "the truth will end up prevailing." Feijóo spoke of the "third conviction in Pedro Sánchez's inner circle," after those of the former Attorney General of the State and José Luis Ábalos, and celebrated that no one is above the law "no matter whose family they are."

Puente has responded to the popular leader with one of his harshest messages. "You are a coward and an incapable," he wrote before warning him that his strategy will have electoral consequences. The minister also directed his reproach at those who, in his words, want to take Feijóo to the Presidency of the Government despite his "evident shortcomings."

Puente accuses the PP of lacking a country project

The parliamentary spokesperson for the PP, Ester Muñoz, had previously described David Sánchez's conviction as a "historic day" and assured that, in any other country, a resolution of this nature would bring down the Government.

The PP has used the ruling to demand political accountability from Pedro Sánchez, although the sentence refers to the hiring of his brother in the Provincial Council of Badajoz and does not attribute any intervention in the facts to the Prime Minister. The resolution is also not final and will be appealed by the defense before the High Court of Justice of Extremadura.

Puente has responded that Génova intends to run in the next general elections with "a collection of judicial orders and sentences as its only electoral argument." In his opinion, the popular leadership has replaced proposals on the country's problems with a strategy focused on investigations and resolutions affecting the PSOE and the Executive's inner circle.

"Their country proposal is neither here nor expected. Their leadership capacity is non-existent. They have nothing to propose nor anything to contribute," the minister wrote, sharing Muñoz's statements.

The response aligns with the stance Puente has maintained in recent months regarding the accumulation of judicial proceedings used by the PP to wear down the Government. The socialist leader argues that Feijóo seeks to obtain in the courts the political advantage he has not yet managed to convert into a sufficient majority in Congress.

From "electoral engineering" to "judicial bricklaying"

Puente closed his offensive by bringing back one of the accusations Feijóo repeats against the Executive. The popular leader has on several occasions spoken of alleged "electoral engineering" by the Government when referring to overseas voting, the grandchildren's law, and other reforms he has mixed into the same political complaint.

The minister responded with a play on words aimed at that strategy. "The PP accuses us of electoral engineering, when what we are witnessing is more like judicial bricklaying," he published.

With that expression, Puente accuses the popular party of building its political offensive from every case, order, or sentence that can be used against the Government. The message avoids entering into a detailed legal assessment of the ruling and concentrates the criticism on the reaction of Feijóo and the national leadership of the PP.

The Provincial Court of Badajoz has sentenced David Sánchez to nine years of special disqualification from public employment or office and from running in elections as a necessary cooperator in a crime of administrative prevarication. The Prosecutor's Office had requested his acquittal, and the court dismissed the crime of influence peddling, which could have resulted in a prison sentence.

The Government has expressed its respect for the resolution, although it disagrees with its conclusions and trusts that it will be reviewed by higher instances. David Sánchez's defense is now preparing the appeal before the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Extremadura.
