The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has welcomed Pope Leo XIV with a message in which he expressed his wish that the Pontiff's visit contribute to "continuing to build bridges of dialogue, understanding, and hope." The President of the Government highlighted that Spain is a "diverse, open country deeply committed to coexistence, social justice, and the defense of human dignity."
The words of the head of the Executive came after attending Leo XIV's first major speech in Spain, in which the Pope appealed for reconciliation, called for greater cooperation between different political and social forces, and warned against polarization and "prefabricated ideologies."
Sánchez received the Pontiff alongside the Kings at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport and later participated in the official reception held at the Royal Palace, where the main State authorities and representatives of the diplomatic corps were present.
From the Government, both the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, emphasized the alignment with some of the messages launched by Leo XIV, especially on issues such as peace, multilateralism, coexistence, and the defense of human dignity.
