Pedro Sánchez has closed ranks this Sunday with the PSOE in one of the most delicate political moments of the legislature and has made it clear that he does not contemplate an early election. The President of the Government assured during his intervention at the 27th Congress of Socialist Youth that the Executive will maintain its “roadmap” until 2027 despite the political and judicial pressure surrounding the party in recent weeks.
The socialist leader intervened for the first time before the militants after the indictment of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the new details known about the Leire Díez case, a week also marked by the entry of UCO agents into the PSOE headquarters in Ferraz to request documentation related to the investigation.
Sánchez took advantage of his speech to strongly criticize PP and Vox, whom he accused of trying to “overthrow the progressive Government with foul play”. “This unruly opposition wants Spain to slow down or even regress”, affirmed the president, before defending that the Executive will continue to promote reforms and social measures “until 2027 and beyond”.
The president also insisted on differentiating between judicial investigations and what he described as “untruths” promoted by the opposition. “Every time there has been behavior not in line with the values of the PSOE, we have acted forcefully. But in the face of untruths, we will also act in the same way”, he maintained during his intervention.
Sánchez also vindicated the Government's economic and social management and accused the opposition of “denying the reality” of a country that, he said, is going through “one of its best moments in recent years”. In that sense, he defended the reforms promoted during the legislature and assured that the Executive will continue to advance despite political difficulties.
The head of the Executive recognized that there are “problems and difficulties”, both internal and external, but defended that the PSOE has always faced crises “showing its face”. Furthermore, he asked the socialist militants to remain mobilized against a right-wing that, in his opinion, seeks to wear down the Government using any judicial controversy.
Sánchez's intervention also served to send a message of political resistance to his party after two particularly complicated weeks for the PSOE. The president wanted to convey an image of strength and continuity in a context of growing pressure on the socialist environment and with several open judicial investigations that continue to mark the national political agenda.
