The PSOE has focused its efforts on containing the political impact of the 'Ábalos case' after the statement of José Luis Ábalos before the Tribunal Supremo last Monday, May 4. In the Government, it is considered key that his intervention has not triggered new revelations of greater scope.

In La Moncloa and in Ferraz was followed with attention an appearance that generated internal concern due to the volume of information that the former minister handles after years in the core of power next to Pedro Sánchez.

Following his statement, the official message of the PSOE has aligned around one idea: there is no structural corruption plot. “It is a serious case, but limited,” socialist sources maintain, seeking to prevent the episode from projecting onto the entire Executive.

Despite this attempt at containment, the political wear and tear is already noticeable. Internal polls reflect a negative impact on the PSOE brand, in a context also marked by regional electoral appointments and a near horizon of general elections next year.

The prominence of the judicial process in the Supreme Court has shifted the political focus for weeks. Without the capacity to lead the public debate, the PSOE has opted to also move the battle to the judicial arena.

In this framework, the socialists have promoted actions against the businessman Víctor de Aldama for his statements, while the minister Félix Bolaños prepares a lawsuit for violation of the right to honor. A strategy with which the Government seeks to limit damages at a particularly sensitive moment.
