The spokesperson for the Partido Popular in the Assembly of Madrid, Carlos Díaz-Pache, reiterated this Monday that the encampment set up in Puerta del Sol against the housing situation is an “illegal occupation of public space”, although he stressed that his party respects the decision of Justice, after the court rejected the immediate eviction requested by the regional Government.
In a press conference at the end of the Board of Spokespersons meeting, Díaz-Pache maintained that the protesters have “taken Puerta del Sol” and assured that “they certainly should not remain there”. He also accused the participants of “vandalizing” both the Bear and the Strawberry Tree and the Real Casa de Correos itself, headquarters of the Madrid Presidency.
Criticism of the Government delegate and reference to public space security
The popular spokesperson stated that there are people “climbing” the building that crowns kilometer zero, a situation that, in his opinion, “would not be allowed in any other public space”. Along the same lines, he added that “no one would allow them to approach the Palacio de la Moncloa within several hundred meters”, and held the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, responsible for this, whom he described as “a loyal dog of Sanchismo”.
Díaz-Pache also said that this situation represents “a shame” and “an affront to all Madrilenians”, as well as “a horror for merchants, for tourists, for those of us who like to enjoy our city and our region”. Despite this, he insisted that the PP respects the decision of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM), although it will continue to denounce what happened and “will take the measures it deems appropriate”.
Justice rejects immediate eviction requested by the Community of Madrid
The judicial resolution known this Monday rejected the very precautionary measure that the Community of Madrid had requested to order the immediate eviction of the encampment, installed since September 27 in front of the Real Casa de Correos in Puerta del Sol. According to the order, to which Europa Press has had access, the court dismisses the urgent procedure and agrees to process the proceedings through the ordinary procedure.
Más Madrid and PSOE celebrate the judicial decision
From Más Madrid, its spokesperson, Manuela Bergerot, defended that the encampment in Sol “will end when those who are giving it life decide”, and reproached the regional president that “she has too much freedom of assembly”, while Justice has reminded her, she said, that “fundamental rights are above her whims”.
Bergerot added: “She wanted to wake up every day and see her mother's house from the terrace of her penthouse, and what she sees is an encampment of young people for the right to housing. No matter how much she wants to evict the encampment, she cannot.”
Along the same lines, the socialist spokesperson in the Assembly, Mar Espinar, pointed out that the campers are exercising their right to assembly, enshrined in the Constitution. “I understand that this thing about Democracy, Rights and Freedoms surprises Mrs. Ayuso and the far right, but it doesn't surprise us,” she stated.
Vox aligns with the PP and calls for the eviction of Sol
For her part, the spokesperson for Vox, Isabel Pérez Moñino, supported the position of the Partido Popular and stressed that Puerta del Sol “must be evicted”. In her opinion, “something must be done because they are illegally occupying a public space and it is causing harm to all Madrilenians. Action must be taken.”
