The new decision by the controversial judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who is carrying out the investigation against the wife of the President of the Government, Begoña Gómez, has already generated the first criticisms, among which are those of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente. The magistrate has given Pedro Sánchez's wife a period of five days to justify that she simply used her passport to travel to London to attend her daughter's graduation. Otherwise, she could face a crime of breach of precautionary measure.

Peinado imposed precautionary measures on her, among which was the withdrawal of Gómez's passport for observing "risk of flight," alleging that one of her bodyguards could help her escape the country. In this context, Sánchez's wife requested authorization to leave Spanish territory. She asked to be able to travel with the president to the NATO summit and to attend her daughter's graduation in London. However, before making the decision, the magistrate went on vacation and passed the baton to his colleague Antonio Viejs –investigating judge in the case against Alberto González Amador– who determined that she could simply travel to London.

This Monday, upon his return from vacation, Peinado has required Begoña Gómez to prove that she only traveled to London, which is why Puente, through his social networks, has reacted by recalling how the investigation into Sánchez's wife began. "He opened the case with press clippings," the head of Transport wrote in an X post.

Likewise, he ironically explained how he would justify the request to the magistrate. "I would provide him with the press clippings with the photos and videos that were taken of her on the plane on the way there and back and at her daughter's graduation. They must be valid," Óscar Puente stated in a critical tone regarding the request.

The Madrid Court evaluates Peinado's decisions

The Provincial Court of Madrid met this Monday to analyze the appeals filed by both the Prosecutor's Office and the defenses against two of the most relevant decisions adopted by judge Juan Carlos Peinado in the investigation of Begoña Gómez. Specifically, the court will review the order that agreed to the opening of oral trial and the resolution that attributed the prosecution of the case to a jury court.

The deliberation was held behind closed doors and was assumed by five magistrates of section 23 in its entirety, given the importance of the issues raised. Likewise, they have evaluated an appeal filed by the popular prosecution against the judge's decision to dismiss the accusation of professional intrusion, and another related to a possible separation of the popular prosecution led by Hazte Oír.

The decision comes at a key moment in the procedure, after Peinado sent Begoña Gómez and her advisor, Cristina Álvarez, to trial for alleged crimes of business corruption, influence peddling, misappropriation, and embezzlement. The businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés also appears in the same case and will have to answer for the first two crimes.
