The PSOE is studying running in the general elections on November 29 with a joint candidacy of left-wing parties for the Senate to try to snatch the absolute majority from the Popular Party that it holds in the Upper House. The possibility remains open and is part of the alternatives that the socialists are evaluating after the early election announced by Pedro Sánchez.

Sources from Ferraz acknowledge to 'Europa Press' that the party is analyzing "all alternatives and scenarios" with the aim of obtaining a favorable result in both the Congress of Deputies and the Senate. The eventual alliance would allow concentrating support from different progressive forces in the elections to the Upper House, although it has not yet been confirmed which parties could integrate it or how the candidacy would be articulated.

The decision must be made within a short period. The socialists have until October 16 to formalize electoral coalitions, according to the calendar planned for the 29N elections. Meanwhile, the political space to the left of the PSOE continues without fully defining its candidacies and the alliance scheme with which it will run in the elections.

The PSOE seeks a formula to dispute control of the Senate with the PP

The PP's absolute majority in the Senate has become one of the elements that condition the socialist electoral strategy. During the current legislature, the popular party has used its dominant position in the Upper House to promote various investigation commissions on matters affecting the PSOE and the Government.

From Ferraz, according to the news agency, they reproach the popular party for the "spurious" use of that parliamentary majority, considering that they have taken advantage of their control of the Senate to promote political oversight initiatives on the socialists. Among the actions promoted by the PP are the appearances related to investigations into alleged corruption linked to the socialist environment. The popular party has called former minister José Luis Ábalos, his former advisor Koldo García, and former PSOE Organization Secretary Santos Cerdán to testify.

Pedro Sánchez himself also appeared before a Senate investigation commission on October 30, 2025. These initiatives have fueled the confrontation between both parties in the Upper House, where the PP has a position that allows it to promote investigations and set much of the parliamentary activity.

The possibility of a joint left-wing candidacy responds, in this context, to the search for electoral formulas that allow socialists to compete for a different composition of the Senate after the general elections.

The left still needs to finalize its alliances for 29N

The eventual unitary list, however, raises several unknowns. The PSOE has not confirmed which parties could join the initiative nor if there is already any kind of advanced negotiation to form a common candidacy. The left-wing landscape remains open for the elections. The different political forces must resolve both the election of their candidates and the possible alliances with which they will try to maximize their parliamentary representation.

The socialist decision will also be conditioned by the electoral deadlines. October 16 is the deadline set for presenting coalitions, so Ferraz has barely a week to evaluate the different options and determine whether it will run alone or explore a shared formula with other parties.

For now, the PSOE keeps all possibilities open and avoids considering a joint candidacy closed. The definitive strategy will depend on political conversations and the socialist leadership's assessment of which formula can favor its results in both chambers.
