Sarah Santaolalla, loud and clear about the eviction of Maricarmen, 87, after her rent price was shot up: "It's a national disgrace"

The situation of Maricarmen has reached the moment that for weeks neighbors, activists and representatives of the world of culture tried to avoid. The 87-year-old woman is being evicted this Wednesday from the home where she has spent 71 years of her life, after the property demanded to raise her monthly rent from 500 to 2,650 euros. Faced with the event, Sarah Santaolalla has reacted publicly through her social networks with a strong message: “Maricarmen is already being evicted. National shame.”

The reaction comes as the National Police keep the area of Alcalde Sáinz de Baranda street cordoned off and remove the tents set up overnight by the Madrid Tenants' Union to try to stop the eviction. The judicial commission in charge of the eviction was scheduled to arrive starting at 9:30 AM.

During the morning, dozens of people continued to gather around the home to show their rejection of the eviction. The mobilization had brought together hundreds of people overnight and various figures from the political and cultural spheres, including Irene Montero, Enrique Santiago, Inés Hernand, and Ana Belén.

Maricarmen herself addressed the crowd to defend her permanence in the house where she has lived for over seven decades. “They want to kick me out for the fucking money. I have lived here for 71 years. I don't want to leave. These people will do anything for money,” she stated. The woman has a recognized disability of 50%.

The case has also generated an offer to try to prevent the eviction. A writer who preferred to remain anonymous has offered to cover the 2,150 euro difference between the 500 euros Maricarmen currently pays and the 2,650 euros claimed by the property. According to the Tenants' Union, the proposal is now in the hands of Urbagestión Desarrollo e Inversión S. L., which so far has not accepted an agreement.

This Wednesday's attempt marks the fourth eviction attempt for Maricarmen, whose case has sparked widespread social mobilization and the intervention of various public figures.
