The deputy of Sumar in Congress, Gerardo Pisarello, pointed this Monday to PP and Vox for using their "influence" in the Judiciary to ensure that the Supreme Court, in a ruling he described as "absurd from a legal point of view," has deprived those naturalized by the provision of the Democratic Memory Law known as the 'grandchildren's law' of their right to vote.
In a press conference in the Lower House, the also deputy of the Comuns disqualified the high court's resolution, emphasizing that it is a "politicized" and "unprecedented" decision, and also stressed that the rapporteur was Antonio Narváez, who openly declared his wish that the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, "be president."
For Gerardo Pisarello, the resolution of the Supreme Court "flagrantly violates the Constitution and the democratic principle" and "channels" the strategy of PP and Vox to "permanently stir up the ghost of electoral fraud while using their influence in the Judiciary to limit the right to vote of hundreds of thousands of people."
Comparison with Donald Trump's practices
The leader of Sumar has equated this operation with the practices of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and has asked citizens to remain "mobilized" against the strategy of the "extreme right to obtain through certain sectors of the Judiciary what they cannot guarantee themselves at the polls."
Likewise, the also candidate for Mayor of Barcelona referred to the ultra-right youths who approached the housing encampment in Sol this Monday and who had to be "repelled by the campers themselves and the Police."
Warning about the far-right and the case of Ilhan Omar
In this context, Gerardo Pisarello has warned of what "the arrival of these far-right forces to institutions would mean" and that they could "control institutional levers to put them at the service of the erosion of democratic rights."
Finally, the deputy of Sumar has condemned the "defamation and persecution" campaign of the Donald Trump government against Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar, whose home has been searched by federal agents. After expressing solidarity with her, he highlighted that the attacks on her person demonstrate "the fear of the far-right of losing the elections" next November. "Many Republican Party leaders are in a panic because Trump's actions could sink their own party," he concluded.
