The Congress will address Housing measures this Wednesday in a control session marked by the opposition's questions to Isabel Rodríguez

The Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, will attend the Congress of Deputies this Wednesday to face a control session in which housing policies, price evolution, and difficulties in guaranteeing access to a home will largely focus the debate. The Minister of Housing will be questioned by representatives of ERC, PNV, Junts, and PP, in a meeting that comes just one day after the approval, by the Council of Ministers, of two new decrees on this matter.

The session will take place in a context of growing social mobilization for access to housing, also reinforced by the case of Maricarmen, the 87-year-old woman who will finally be able to return to her home in Retiro after reaching an agreement with the property. Her situation was one of the triggers for last weekend's protests and the encampment set up in the Puerta del Sol.

Two decrees with measures on evictions, rents, and investment funds

In this scenario, the Government has approved two decrees that incorporate measures such as the extension until 2030 of protection against certain evictions, the regulation of seasonal and room rentals, and new limitations on the acquisition of housing by investment funds. These norms must be validated by Congress this Friday, in a vote that will add pressure to the political debate on housing.

The initiatives seek to respond to an issue that has escalated on the public and parliamentary agenda, with parties from different groups demanding explanations from the Ministry of Housing about the scope of the measures and the Executive's ability to push through its proposals.

The questions that Minister Isabel Rodríguez will have to answer

During the control session, parliamentary groups will ask questions and propose initiatives on the Ministry's management and the search for agreements to advance in housing matters.

From Junts, the Housing spokesperson, Marta Madrenas, will ask Isabel Rodríguez if she believes that a rectification of housing policies would improve the situation and restore citizen confidence. For her part, Maribel Vaquero, on behalf of the PNV, will ask the minister how the Government intends to overcome parliamentary difficulties and reach agreements with other groups to push through its initiatives. PP deputy Eduardo Carazo will focus his question on the evolution of housing prices in Spain, while ERC's Housing spokesperson, Etna Estrems Fayos, will raise an urgent interpellation on the Executive's policies to guarantee the right to decent housing.

This last intervention will open the door to a broader debate with the minister and could lead to a motion that will be debated and voted on in a future plenary session. The debate will allow parliamentary groups to state their position on the Government's measures and propose new initiatives to advance access to decent housing, at a time marked by social pressure and the rising cost of rents and housing.
