Maricarmen is "very happy" after accepting the agreement with Urbagestión and returns to her home where she resided for 70 years

Maricarmen, the 87-year-old woman evicted last week from her home in the Retiro district, has accepted the agreement reached this Monday with Urbagestión, owner of the property located on Alcalde Sainz de Baranda street, and will be able to return to her home when she is discharged from the hospital at Gregorio Marañón Hospital.

An agreement after more than four hours of meeting

The understanding was closed on Monday night, after more than four hours of negotiation between representatives of Maricarmen and Urbagestión, with mediation from professionals of the Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS Madrid). The pact includes the signing of a new rental contract for a period of eight years and a rent that will not exceed 30% of her net income.

After the acceptance of the agreement, Maricarmen's legal representation is already working on the necessary arrangements to formalize the new contract, while the municipal program plans to offer her legal, economic, technical, and fiscal advice throughout the duration of the lease. For the property, in addition, the agreement includes a multi-risk home insurance and another for non-payment of rents.

The news, communicated in the hospital

The news was conveyed this Tuesday to Maricarmen in her room at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where she has been admitted since last Wednesday's eviction. According to her lawyer, Beatriz Duro, explained to Europa Press, it was her cousin Vicente who communicated it to her, and the lawyer highlighted that the woman is "very happy" to be able to return to her home, where her belongings remain.

A home where she resided since 1956

Maricarmen was evicted last Wednesday from the house where she had lived since 1956. The old rent contract had initially been signed by her father and, subsequently, she subrogated it. Urbagestión acquired the property in 2018 and went to court considering the lease terminated.

In the judicial process, a first sentence ruled in favor of Maricarmen, but the Provincial Court later ruled in favor of the property and the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by her defense in December 2023. The eviction was executed on the fourth attempt, after hundreds of people spent the night in front of the building to try to prevent it.

The woman, 87 years old and with a recognized disability of 50%, was evacuated on a stretcher by Samur paramedics and transferred to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.

Mobilization after the eviction

The eviction triggered a march on Saturday from the Puerta del Sol to the Congress of Deputies under the slogan "Not one more Maricarmen", after which the encampment began at the well-known "kilometer zero".
