Yolanda Díaz and Mónica García applaud "the greatest advance in housing matters of the last decade": they put the focus on the importance of "citizen mobilization"

The second vice-president and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, and the Minister of Health, Mónica García, attributed this Tuesday to citizen mobilization the approval in the Council of Ministers of the two royal housing decrees, a battery of measures that both have presented as a direct result of pressure on the streets.

On her Blue Sky profile, Yolanda Díaz stated that these two decrees represent “the greatest advance in housing matters in the last decade” and that they have been possible “thanks to citizen mobilization”, to “Maricarmen” and to “the thousands of people in the streets”.

For her part, the Minister of Health and leader of Más Madrid, Mónica García, claimed that her political space has achieved what a month ago “was unimaginable”, with the approval of this package of housing measures.

Measures on evictions, rents and vulture funds

The two royal decrees include protection against evictions extended until 2030, the regulation of seasonal and room rentals, the prohibition of purchase by “vulture funds” until 2028 and the two-year extension of current contracts ending before December 31, 2028, among other issues.

In addition, an agreement has been reached for the automatic renewal of rentals, a measure that will be included in a second royal decree.

García has defended that “it is time to intervene in the speculative housing market and start to balance the scales between citizens and vulture funds”, and has stressed that these two decrees have been approved by the Government “thanks to the mobilizations and encampments”.

Last-minute negotiations and parliamentary process in Congress

This Tuesday's Council of Ministers meeting began after 10:30 a.m., an hour late, due to last-minute negotiations, although an agreement was finally reached and all ministers entered the meeting.

The last obstacles to closing the pact focused on Sumar's demand to include in the decree the regulation of room rentals and the automatic extension of contracts, two of the demands of the Tenants' Union, which is promoting the protest encampment in La Puerta del Sol in Madrid.

After the approval by the Government, the Executive has requested the Congress of Deputies to hold an extraordinary plenary session this Friday for the immediate validation of both decrees.
