The data provided this Tuesday by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (Miteco) have shown an increase of 34% in the budget allocated between 2024 and 2026 to face the forest fires affecting the country. Among the investment, a 47% is allocated to the Forest Fire Reinforcement Brigades (BRIF), and the achievement of a new labor agreement as recognition for the great work they perform each year.
The economic increase is also aimed at the modernization of the state operational infrastructure. The ministry led by Sara Aagesen is working on the renovation of its bases, continues expanding the capacity of aerial means and in the acquisition of seven new amphibious aircraft, expected to be incorporated starting in 2028.
More resources for prevention
The department highlights that beyond limiting itself to fire extinction, the investment between the last two years has also focused on reinforcing the preventive work of the devices that act outside the summer campaign, with an increase of 30%.
Linked to this area is the work of the Preventive Work Brigades and the Integral Forest Fire Prevention Teams, which carry out actions such as clearing, pruning, and controlled burns to reduce plant fuel and decrease the risk of fire spread.
Forest management and rural environment
The Ministry also maintains that prevention also involves promoting more sustainable land management. Thus, through different calls from the Biodiversity Foundation, it has allocated 100 million euros to projects related to bioeconomy, sustainable forest management, and fire prevention in rural areas. In addition to 30 million euros for intervention on forest masses especially vulnerable to climate change, in order to reduce their deterioration and minimize the risk of large fires in the coming years.
