The Government approves this Tuesday a royal decree-law that establishes the IRPF exemption for compensation intended for victims of sexual abuse within the Church. The measure, which will be ratified in the Council of Ministers, is part of a broader package of tax reforms and responds to one of the main demands of those affected.

This decision is framed within the agreement reached last January 8 between the Executive, the Episcopal Conference and the Spanish Conference of Religious. As of April 15, this pact has set in motion a mixed system of recognition and reparation in which the State articulates the process and the Church assumes the payment of the compensations proposed by the Ombudsman.

The tax exemption will not only apply to future compensations, but also to those that have already been paid by the Church through its own mechanisms. In this way, it is guaranteed that victims will not have to pay taxes on compensations that seek to repair damages suffered for years.

From the Executive, they emphasize that this measure complies with one of the key points of the agreement and strengthens the institutional commitment with the victims. The Government considers that it is a decisive step in the recognition of their situation, consolidating a model in which economic reparation does not entail new burdens for those who have suffered the abuses.
