Pope Leo XIV took advantage of his first speech in Spain to launch a message of reconciliation and understanding at a time marked by political and social polarization. Before the Kings, Pedro Sánchez, Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the rest of the State authorities, the Pontiff defended that Spanish history shows that "it is not the culture of confrontation, but that of encounter, that generates stability and prosperity."
The Pontiff assured that one of the objectives of his visit is to promote greater cooperation between the different sensibilities of Spanish society. In this sense, he lamented that the search for popularity through confrontation continues to grow while human dignity continues to be violated in numerous areas.
The Pope expressly asked to abandon "divisive and polarizing narratives" to replace them with a more complex and enriching vision of reality. In his opinion, current problems cannot be addressed from ideological simplifications, but from openness to dialogue and the search for common spaces.
During his speech, he also warned about the impact of new technologies and digital networks, which, he pointed out, can become environments where prejudices are exacerbated, critical thinking is weakened and interests that fuel destructive dynamics prosper.
For this reason, he called for a determined commitment to education, research, universities and civil society, convinced that training and culture are essential tools to strengthen democratic coexistence and face the challenges of the future.
Leo XIV concluded by vindicating the value of multilateralism, peace and cooperation between peoples, while encouraging Spain to continue promoting social dialogue, integrating demands for autonomy and unity, and contributing to the strengthening of the European project as an instrument at the service of all humanity.
