The Senate's Interior Committee—where the PP holds an absolute majority—is scheduled to summon the Director General of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, next week for an urgent appearance to provide explanations about the meetings she allegedly held with former socialist militant Leire Díez, as reported by 'EFE'. The summons will be decided at the meeting of the committee's Bureau, which will begin this Friday at 1:00 PM.

This move comes after recent statements by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who, after González admitted to several meetings with Díez, assured that there was "no meeting with Leire where the plot was discussed." A statement that also drew a reaction from the spokesperson for the Popular Party in Congress, Eter Muñoz, who, through her X account, declared: ". They lie to everyone all the time because they know that what we are learning is true. The director of the Civil Guard and Marlaska are taking too long to resign."

Marlaska reiterates González's "honorability" after admitting several meetings

The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has commented on the statement by the Director of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, in which she admitted to having held several meetings with Leire Díez. In this regard, Marlaska stated that there was "no meeting with Leire where the plot was discussed."

He also once again praised González's "honorability", as he did yesterday, when he denied that meetings with the former socialist militant and pressures on Civil Guard agents had occurred. "This minister would not have accepted any pressure," he reiterated.

The Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard indicates in its report on the 'Leire Díez case' that the Director of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, and one of the investigated parties in the case, former socialist militant Leire Díez, held meetings, according to agents, for the agent to "initiate administrative actions" against investigating agents in cases against the socialist party.

In this regard, González, through a statement, has acknowledged that she met with the former militant on three occasions, but, she has assured that she has “never” interfered in any operation or investigation against Civil Guard agents.

According to her account, in the first meeting—in a cafeteria near the Civil Guard General Directorate—she held the position of Government delegate in Madrid and Díez contacted her explaining that she was a journalist, “without specifying where or for whom she worked,” and she has asserted that “nothing related to the work carried out by this Corps was discussed”; in the second, she already held the position of director of the Civil Guard and has clarified that it had the same characteristics as the first, and, in their last encounter, Díez asked her to re-admit Commander Rubén Villalba—investigated in the National Court for the ‘Koldo case’—but González “flatly rejected” the request and “immediately ended said meeting.”

Likewise, she has accepted that while she was Government delegate and Díez director of Institutional Relations at Correos, their relationship began “only through WhatsApp exchanges” that were related to “labor mobilizations.”

The summary of the ‘Leire Díez case’ places former socialist militant Leire Díez and former PSOE Organization Secretary, Santos Cerdán, at the center of an alleged operation aimed at obtaining sensitive information and acting on judicial investigations affecting the PSOE, the Government, and the circle of President Pedro Sánchez.
