The president of the Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, demanded this Wednesday that the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, appear before the Permanent Deputation of Congress to give explanations about the incursion of Moroccan military vessels into Ceuta waters, coinciding with the days of the massive entry of immigrants recorded at the end of July.
In a recorded video sent by the PP to the media, Feijóo stated: “While thousands of people were assaulting our border, there were Moroccan navy ships in Spanish waters. The Government knew it and the president went on vacation. And, furthermore, he hid it from the Cortes Generales, from the people of Ceuta, and from the rest of the Spanish people. There are no words to describe it.”
For this reason, the leader of the PP has asked Pedro Sánchez to attend the Permanent Deputation, an body that replaces the Plenary in non-ordinary sessions and once the Cortes have been dissolved, to explain the presence of these vessels in Ceuta waters.
The PP refers the matter to the Audiencia Nacional and the EPP
Feijóo described the latest revelations about the presence of Moroccan navy ships in Spanish waters as of “extraordinary gravity” and stressed that “what happened is not just another scandal, it is the negligent and unforgivable abandonment of 80,000 Spaniards by those who had the obligation to protect them.”
Furthermore, he confirmed that the PP has already brought the case to the attention of the Audiencia Nacional, where the party is a party to the proceedings. “It has already been brought to the attention of the Audiencia Nacional where we are a party,” he indicated.
The popular leader also announced that he will convey these facts to his partners in the European People's Party (EPP), at a meeting scheduled for this Thursday prior to the European Council. “This very Thursday I will convey these facts to our European partners at the meeting of Popular Party leaders prior to the European Council,” he said, referring to the event in which the European conservative party participates, to which the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, belongs.
“Spain is a sovereign nation”
During his speech, Alberto Núñez Feijóo insisted that Spain “is a sovereign nation and sovereign nations are not put to the test with impunity,” and added that “our territorial integrity, our borders and the security of Spaniards are not negotiable.”
The leader of the PP reiterated that he aspires to maintain a “good relationship” with Morocco if he reaches Moncloa, although he specified that a good neighborly relationship “begins with respect and reciprocity,” something that, he said, they will demand “with all the necessary firmness.” “Events of this kind are a point of no return that cannot happen. I will not allow it,” he affirmed.
Feijóo also pledged that “the whole truth will be known, that responsibilities will be cleared, and that something similar will not happen again,” considering that “the first obligation” of a Prime Minister is to protect his country. “And you have my word that I will fulfill it,” he concluded.
Bolaños responds and denies connection with the massive entry of immigrants
In response to Feijóo's request, the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, replied that the PP “will ask for anything” to avoid talking about issues such as housing, pensions or public services, which, in his opinion, are of more interest to citizens.
In an intervention on the program ‘Al Rojo Vivo’ on 'La Sexta', Bolaños also defended that the incursion of Moroccan warships into Spanish waters “has nothing to do” with the massive entry of immigrants into Ceuta from Morocco.
The minister also maintained that Pedro Sánchez did not reveal this episode in his appearance in Congress last September 3 because it is a matter of “national security” that should be addressed “in a reserved manner.”
