The PSOE has decided to bring to Congress the controversy surrounding Alberto Núñez Feijóo's home in Madrid. The Socialist Group registered this Thursday a non-legislative motion for the Chamber to vote on whether the leader of the opposition should update his declaration of assets, activities, and economic interests and include all information about his patrimony, his current income, and possible in-kind remunerations.
The initiative expressly points to the payment of the home where Feijóo resides in El Viso, one of Madrid's most exclusive areas. The socialist text asks the PP leader to reflect “all information about his patrimony, income or in-kind remunerations,” including “the payment of his current home.”
The move comes after the exchange between Pedro Sánchez and Feijóo in the last control session of the political year. The PP leader asked the president to show his tax declarations. Sánchez accepted the challenge and returned the pressure with a phrase directed at the popular leader's rent: “That way we find out how much his party pays you for the rent of the home you have in El Viso.”
Feijóo responded later, visibly annoyed, in the corridors of Congress. He assured that the lease is paid by his family, specifically him and his partner, and accused the president of publicly pointing out where he lives with his minor son. The Popular Party has denied paying for the home, although the declaration of assets published on the Congress website does not yet include his current income as party president and president of the Popular Group in the Lower House.
A declaration not updated since 2023
The PSOE maintains that Feijóo's last declaration available in Congress dates from August 2023 and includes data prior to his current stage in the Lower House. This documentation shows additional income to his deputy's salary, including those corresponding to his position as president of the PP and as president of the Popular Group in the Senate, totaling 102,267 euros.
The socialists consider that this information has become outdated and that citizens cannot know how much Feijóo currently receives as president of the PP and of the Popular Group in Congress. Nor, according to the initiative, what other income he receives, under what concept, and who pays for the residence where he lives in Madrid.
The non-legislative motion includes two points. The first proposes that all deputies reflect in their declarations complete information on assets, income, remuneration in kind, activities, and economic interests. The second is addressed to the leader of the opposition due to his institutional position and demands especially rigorous compliance with these transparency obligations.
The text recalls that the position of leader of the opposition has institutional recognition in the order of state precedences and argues that this position demands greater clarity in patrimonial matters. The initiative is not binding, but it will allow the PSOE to bring the matter to the Plenary and force the groups to take a stand on Feijóo's economic transparency.
The Congress Bureau will now have to qualify the motion before it can reach debate. If it passes that procedure, the El Viso home will return to the center of the parliamentary struggle between Sánchez and Feijóo, this time with a specific vote on the update of his income and the possible payment in kind of his residence.
