The State Attorney's Office has decided to appear in the separate part of the 'Plus Ultra' case that investigates some jewels valued at 1.3 million euros located on May 19 in a safe in an office linked to the former President of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. The decision comes after the judge of the Audiencia Nacional, José Luis Calama, offered the Tax Agency to intervene in the procedure, considering that the Treasury could be "a potential victim" if a tax fraud crime were finally appreciated.

In the order by which he opened this separate piece, the magistrate maintained that the nature of the investigated facts could be "constitutive of a crime against the Public Treasury and a crime of smuggling" and pointed out that the investigated facts could cause economic damage whose management corresponds to the Tax Agency, which is why he proposed its incorporation into the procedure.

The jewels found, according to the investigation, did not appear in any declaration submitted to the Treasury. Zapatero appeared before the magistrate on June 17 and avoided commenting on the origin of these assets. During his statement, he requested a period of "one week or ten days" to gather documentation before offering an explanation. So far, however, it has not been revealed that this information has been incorporated into the procedure.

The decision of the State Attorney's Office also comes a few days after the intention of the director of the Tax Agency, Soledad Fernández Doctor, to leave office became known. Fernández Doctor will soon have to appear before the SEPI investigation commission of the Senate, where the Treasury's actions in relation to these jewels will foreseeably be one of the issues that will focus the debate.

The PP will again summon Zapatero to the SEPI commission

On June 30, the PP spokesperson in the Senate, Alicia García, announced that her group will again summon the former President of the Government to appear before the investigation commission of the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI). The popular party justifies this decision after his intervention in the Koldo commission, where they consider that he "lied" and left questions unanswered.

For the moment, the PP has not set a date for that appearance. As García explained, it will occur "when we deem it convenient, depending on the investigation and depending on the progress of the judicial investigations".
