The spokesperson for the Sindicat de Llogateres, Enric Aragonès, has opened the door to a possible general strike over housing and labor rights “if things don’t change”, and has demanded that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, not present a housing decree this Tuesday that, in his opinion, would be “a farce”.
Aragonès made these statements to TV3 during the mobilization called early Monday by the union in Barcelona, a protest that caused cuts in several parts of the city and was carried out to demand the so-called “Maricarmen decree”, named after the case of the 87-year-old woman evicted from her home in the Retiro neighborhood, in Madrid.
Negotiations with labor unions and specific demands
According to the spokesperson for the Sindicat de Llogateres, the organization is “in conversations” with labor unions with a view to a general strike, while keeping several demands on the table addressed to Pedro Sánchez’s Executive.
Among these requests are the automatic renewal of contracts, the freezing of prices during the term of the contract, and the creation of a structural mechanism for suspending evictions for vulnerable people.
