I demand the resignation of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and that he call elections.
Surely, right now, many of you will be freaking out, as they say colloquially. You will say: who is this? Who am I to ask for the resignation of President Donald Trump? No matter how much you dislike the president, you will think: but who is this to ask for it?
Well, what I have just done, that is, asking for the resignation of the President of the United States, has exactly the same practical effect as what Feijóo, Abascal, and Puigdemont have done; what the Popular Party, Vox, and Junts have done in the Congress of Deputies and in the Senate.
You already know that they have led two motions to demand that Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government, call elections or do so through a vote of confidence. And, furthermore, even the Popular Party boasts about it, claiming that the majority of the Chamber urged the President of the Government to resign and call elections.
Well, there you have it. The Popular Party, Vox, and Junts have asked Pedro Sánchez to call elections. Anyway, let's explain how things work. Let's explain how our fundamental law, the Spanish Constitution, works. Let's explain what articles 112, 113, and 114 of the Constitution specifically say.
What they say is that the tool, the instrument that the legislative power has, that is, the Congress and the parliamentary groups that make up the Congress of Deputies, is the motion of no confidence. It is the instrument that parliamentary groups have to remove the president who is in office at that moment from the Government. In this case, Pedro Sánchez.
What amounts to calling elections, however, is a prerogative of the President of the Government. That is, of Pedro Sánchez.
Even the vote of confidence that PP, Vox, and Junts demand through those two motions they have won, because the votes of PP, Vox, Junts, and also UPN have been added, both in Congress and in the Senate, is also a prerogative of the President of the Government. It is not a tool that the legislative power has to remove the President of the Government.
That is, both the vote of confidence and the electoral call can only be activated by the President of the Government. At this moment, Pedro Sánchez.
Which means, it's as clear as day. It's absurd. It's politically useless for PP, Vox, Junts, and UPN to call for an election or to request a vote of confidence, which only the President of the Government can do. If they want, they should combine those votes to carry out a motion of no confidence. That would be good. That would have a political and constitutional effect.
Ah, but not that. They don't want that. Junts does not join the Popular Party and Vox to activate that motion of no confidence.
So, if they don't want a motion of no confidence, why are they putting on this spectacle in Congress and the Senate? Why are they using the Upper House and the Lower House to serve their particular political interests?
For the headlines. Because that's the only thing winning those motions has served for, both in Congress and in the Senate. It has only served for PP, Vox, and Junts to appear in the headlines saying they have won, that the three of them are calling for an election, and that Sánchez has lost the support of Congress.
No, no, no. Because then you don't join for a motion of no confidence, which is the real instrument available to the Congress of Deputies, the parliamentary groups that make up Congress, to unite, combine, and remove the president from the executive power, from the Government of Spain. But there are no votes for that.
I insist: why? Why use, why manipulate Congress and the Senate for political, media, and particular interests? There is no majority at this moment that wants to overthrow Pedro Sánchez, no matter how much they have approved those two motions in which they demand that he do things that only Pedro Sánchez can do, if he wants to.
If they want to overthrow the President of the Government, win a motion of no confidence. That is their instrument: that of the parliamentary groups, that of PP, that of Vox, that of Junts, and that of UPN. Let them win it, let them put it into motion, let them unite and remove Pedro Sánchez from the Government.
Otherwise, everything else only serves to manipulate Congress and the Senate in favor of their particular media interests and their particular political interests.
Please, Feijóo, Abascal, Puigdemont: win a motion of no confidence if you want to. And, if not, for God's sake, stop getting in the way. Stop using the Upper House and the Lower House. Stop using the seat of national sovereignty for your particular political interests.
