An opening with international projection

The next edition of the Málaga Film Festival – Spanish Cinema will kick off on March 6, 2026 with Calle Málaga, the new film by director Maryam Touzani, marking her Spanish-language directorial and screenwriting debut. Co-produced by Morocco, Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany, the film features the participation of RTVE, Movistar Plus+, and Eurimages, as well as funding from the ICAA

Calle Málaga tells the story of María Ángeles, played by Carmen Maura, a 79-year-old woman living in Tangier who fights to keep her home when her daughter arrives from Madrid to sell it. Throughout the narrative, the protagonist rediscovers love and desire on a profoundly human journey.

Official Section with prominent voices

In addition to the opening film, the Official Competition Section presents an eclectic selection of feature films:

  • High Abilities, by Spaniard Víctor García León, starring Marián Álvarez and Juan Diego Botto, explores family tensions and social expectations with a critical and emotional perspective that connects with broad audiences.

  • After Kim, directed by Ángeles González Sinde, starring Darío Grandinetti and Adriana Ozores, proposes an intimate journey after a significant loss, focusing on human relationships and the rebuilding of life after grief.

  • The Wolf's Heart, by Peruvian Francisco J. Lombardi, brings the voice of Latin America with a profound and reflective story that delves into the human condition in complex environments.

  • The Woman in the Row, a Spanish-Argentine co-production by Benjamín Ávila, addresses themes of identity and memory, with a perspective that blends narrative sensitivity and emotional exploration.

A festival with global reach

With these and other proposals, the 29th Málaga Film Festival reaffirms its role as a platform for Spanish-language cinema and its dialogue with universal stories that connect creators and audiences from different continents, and it will be the prelude to the awards and film festival season of 2026.
