The Princess of Asturias Awards for Sports have recognized in their 2026 edition Lionel Messi, one of the most influential names in the history of world sports, as a new laureate after a career full of titles, records, and a global footprint difficult to match.
The jury's decision highlighted not only his extraordinary sporting achievements but also his exemplary behavior on the field and his constant commitment to collective play. In addition, his solidarity work through his foundation and his role as UNICEF ambassador, focused on education and child health in vulnerable contexts, were emphasized.
Throughout more than two decades of professional career, Messi has built an unprecedented legacy, accumulating titles in clubs such as FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami, in addition to his great international success with the Argentine national team, with which he won the 2022 World Cup, as well as several Copa América and other top-level tournaments.
The jury also highlighted his ability to remain in the world elite for almost twenty years, consolidating himself as the footballer with the most titles in history and one of the most awarded athletes on the planet, with multiple Ballons d'Or and individual distinctions throughout his career.
With this recognition, the Princess of Asturias Awards once again focus on a figure who transcends football to become a global icon of sport, perseverance, and competitive excellence.
