The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, together with minister José Manuel Albares, has reaffirmed this Thursday Spain's commitment to the victims of terrorism on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, which is celebrated this August 21 under the motto "Healing through memory."
This year marks the ninth edition of the day, with the aim of honoring those who have suffered terrorist violence, preserving their legacy, and contributing to the prevention of new episodes of violence. The Spanish Government has also highlighted the importance of promoting a "respectful, inclusive, and responsible" memory, placing victims and their families at the center of the commemoration.
In this edition, the UN will address the role that governments, civil society, educators, and victims themselves can play in building a memory that contributes to coexistence and social cohesion. Spain will defend this approach at the United Nations, where it participates as co-chair of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism.
The central event of the day will take place in New York and will feature the participation of victims and their families, in an international tribute aimed at keeping their memory alive and strengthening the response to terrorism.
In addition, among the initiatives promoted in this edition is "Building a Safer Internet for Victims of Terrorism," a proposal aimed at fostering a safer digital environment for those who have suffered terrorist violence.
With this commemoration, Spain once again places the memory of victims as a tool for preventing violence and building more cohesive societies, defending before the United Nations a response focused on the dignity, remembrance, and protection of victims.
