The follow-up of Spanish passengers affected by the hantavirus outbreak associated with the MV Hondius cruise ship brings a first positive news. One of the two confirmed cases in Spain has completed his isolation period and has left the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital after meeting all clinical and diagnostic criteria required by health authorities.
The decision comes after verifying a favorable evolution of the patient, who has not presented symptoms in recent days and has obtained negative results in the tests carried out to check for the presence of the virus. With this, he becomes the first Spanish affected person related to this episode to receive medical discharge.
The situation is different in the case of the second infected passenger, who remains under supervision in one of the high isolation units of the hospital center. Although his condition is not serious, the recent appearance of a low-grade fever requires maintaining the control and surveillance measures planned for these cases.
Coinciding with this evolution, the Ministry of Health has updated the action protocol for the outbreak. The document establishes that patients can leave isolation when they remain at least three days without symptoms and present two negative PCR tests, performed 48 hours apart. According to the department, these criteria are based on “the absence of symptoms and the negativization of biological samples most directly related to the possible elimination of the virus, such as urine and oropharyngeal exudate.”
Meanwhile, the 12 passengers considered close contacts continue to comply with quarantine at the health center. The authorities contemplate their departure on the weekend, provided that the evolution is favorable, although they must maintain isolation measures in their homes until June 21.
