The director of 'ElConstitucional.es', Hugo Pereira, on Monday in 'Mañaneros 360', TVE's morning show, criticized the Popular Party's (PP) strategy regarding the theory of the alleged electoral "rigging". Pereira warned that Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Isabel Díaz Ayuso are entering dangerous territory by questioning the integrity of the Spanish electoral system.
Pereira pointed out that the PP is mixing different issues to fuel a general suspicion about the vote. “The Popular Party is mixing the regulation of immigrants, the Grandchildren's Law, the CERA vote, and also the postal vote, which are completely different things,” he explained. In his opinion, this mixture contributes to creating noise about democratic guarantees at a time of strong competition with the far-right Vox.
The director of this media outlet defended that the PP has every right to exercise tough opposition against Pedro Sánchez's government, but he drew a clear line. “The Popular Party, in its role, has to be in opposition, of course. It is the opposition, it has to be a tough opposition,” he affirmed, before warning that the path chosen in this case goes much further than the usual political clash.
“What it is doing right now is jeopardizing, questioning our electoral system and our democracy,” Hugo Pereira stressed. In his analysis, Feijóo and, “especially Ayuso,” are trying to stop the leakage of PP voters to the far-right Vox by copying part of its frameworks, both in substance and in form.
The competition with Vox is getting out of hand for the PP
Pereira placed the PP's move within a strategy to stem Vox's growth. “I can understand Feijóo's strategy, I insist, and especially Ayuso's in the Community of Madrid, of competing with Vox, of resembling Vox in many issues, even in terms of forms, of course in content and forms,” he noted.
The journalist remarked that this strategy is getting out of control. “What is evident is that it is getting out of hand,” he said on the TVE set. For Pereira, the problem arises when a state party begins to fuel doubts about the electoral system to dispute political space with the far-right.
“I never imagined a Popular Party, a necessary party, a party that has to be in opposition, I insist even a tough one, to Pedro Sánchez, that it would question our democracy, our electoral system and our democracy. I never imagined it”, he concluded.
