"We want the conversation to be for everyone": Javier Ruiz vindicates La Séptima against a television landscape "biased to the right"

Javier Ruiz, editorial director of La Séptima, explained during the presentation of the new channel the reasons that led him to be part of the project and what kind of television the team behind the new channel intends to build. The journalist defended that his incorporation responds both to a personal motivation and to a need he considers existing in the current Spanish audiovisual landscape.

"Many of us have joined this project because emulating a television channel is something that happens once in a generation and I believe you must take this opportunity," explained Ruiz, who defined the launch of a new channel as "a privilege." However, the editorial director wanted to emphasize that there is also an "institutional or social" reason behind his commitment to La Séptima.

In this regard, Ruiz was particularly forceful when analyzing the current television landscape: "We live in a television landscape absolutely biased to the right." The journalist pointed out that La Séptima does not intend to simply position itself as the ideological response to other operators: "We do not intend to become the 'reds on duty'," he said.

The intention, as he explained, is to expand the space for voices and perspectives on television. "Yes, we want the conversation to be for everyone. That topics and voices are not dictated by just a few and that it is not a monopoly," Ruiz defended. His goal, he added, can be summarized as "broadening the view, broadening the conversation, and broadening the voice."

A television focused on live broadcasting

Ruiz also advanced some of the main characteristics of the television that La Séptima intends to develop. The editorial director defined the proposal as "the television of the 21st century," with a particularly strong commitment to live news.

"That means live television, like live weather, nothing recorded," he explained. The reason, according to Ruiz, lies in the speed with which events unfold: "Current events move so fast that we are going to tackle them live."

The channel thus intends for viewers to find on their screen what is happening at any given moment. "If it's happening, you can see it here. If it's occurring, this is the screen where you will have what's happening," summarized the editorial director.

"Live with context"

But La Séptima's bet will not be limited to recounting events as they happen. Ruiz has placed context as another of the great pillars of the editorial proposal. "They will know what is happening and they will know why it is happening and what happens from now on, what consequences it has," he explained.

In this sense, he has established a difference between the succession of news and true information. "I see a lot of news happening, but there is very little information," he pointed out. And he summarized his approach with a clear definition: "Information is why and what happens from now on."

Contrast and rigor will complete, according to Ruiz, the editorial bases of the new channel. A bet with which La Séptima intends to carve out a niche in the Spanish television landscape by offering a broader view of current affairs and placing live broadcasting at the center of its proposal.

"We are going to have a lot of fun," Ruiz concluded, inviting viewers to accompany the team in the birth of the new channel: "Welcome because you are going to have a lot of fun with us."
