Ayuso and Almeida's Formula 1 generates a new front of criticism: residents denounce more than 300 million euros in spending

The Formula 1 project promoted by the Community of Madrid and the City Council, under the governments of Isabel Díaz Ayuso and José Luis Martínez-Almeida, continues to generate rejection among neighborhood groups, environmentalists and has increased the criticism from the opposition.

In this regard, the platform Stop Formula 1 Madrid has once again questioned the impact that, according to its own calculations, the construction of the urban circuit will have on public coffers, the environment and the quality of life of the residents of the area.

The platform, made up of residents from neighborhoods such as Canillas, Villa Rosa, Las Cárcavas, Valdebebas and San Lorenzo, estimates the cost associated with the project at more than 365 million euros. Among the data it disseminates, it also points to the elimination of more than 700 trees and more than 150 days a year of cuts and mobility disruptions.

The group also focuses on the environmental impact. According to figures provided by Stop Formula 1 Madrid, each race would mean the emission of more than 10 tons of CO₂. The platform considers that these effects are incompatible with a city model that prioritizes rest, mobility and the well-being of residents over the celebration of large events.

The rejection has the support of various associations and organizations, including the Barajas Neighborhood Association, the Villarosa Neighborhood Association, La Noria, the San Lorenzo Neighborhood Association, the STOP IFEMA Festivals Platform, Stop Torres Cárcavas, the Platform for the Right to the City, the M-30 Affected Platform, the Madrid Tree Table, Ecologistas en Acción and Extinction Rebellion. Representatives of municipal opposition groups also participate.

The group maintains that the circuit will significantly alter the daily life of the affected neighborhoods, with more noise, pollution and mobility problems. For this reason, it has announced that it will continue to promote legal actions, mobilizations and awareness activities to try to stop the project that it attributes to the governments of Ayuso and Almeida.

In this context, Stop Formula 1 Madrid has called for new mobilizations under the slogan “Our neighborhoods are not a circuit”, for this Sunday, September 13. The platform defends that Madrid must opt for a habitable city model and demands that the well-being of residents be placed above the interests linked to the celebration of major sporting events.

Más Madrid intensifies its pressure against Ayuso 

The criticism of the project also comes amid Más Madrid's offensive against Ayuso's management. The spokesperson for the party, Mónica García, has questioned the priorities of the regional president by comparing the situation of waiting lists for mammograms with other expenses and projects of the regional Government: “More than 9,000 women without a date for a mammogram while Ayuso pays for her luxury penthouse, the Formula 1 windfall, and the 5,000 million to Quirón.”

Más Madrid has thus started the new political year by placing Ayuso at the center of its criticism with a banner displayed in Carabanchel under the message “Madrid is not a VIP box”. The campaign links the president's management with various controversies, including the penthouse acquired by the Community of Madrid, Formula 1, and healthcare management.
