Granada trembles from a magnitude 5 earthquake while the Junta warns of possible aftershocks: the fight against the Huelva fire continues

An earthquake of magnitude 5 has shaken a good part of Andalusia this morning after its epicenter was located in Alhendín (Granada). The seismic movement has been especially perceived in the provinces of Málaga, Jaén and Córdoba, although it has also been felt in Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, the Community of Madrid and Extremadura. According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the tremor has been perceptible in more than 200 municipalities spread across five autonomous communities, albeit with different intensity.

The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has conveyed a message of tranquility, although he has asked to take extreme precautions against possible damage to buildings. "A night of fright and unease in Granada with a magnitude 5 earthquake that has caused some material damage and has been felt in several provinces," he said on his social networks. Moreno has recommended paying special attention to cornices and facades that may have been affected and following the instructions of the emergency services.

The Board itself has warned that the seismic episode might not have ended. Emergency services indicate that during the next hours or even days, aftershocks could be registered, a common phenomenon after an earthquake and which, as they have explained, does not necessarily imply a dangerous situation if self-protection recommendations are followed.

The earthquake also occurs in the midst of the forest fire emergency affecting different parts of Spain and while Andalusia continues to work to control the Niebla fire, in Huelva. The fire, declared on August 6, has slowed its advance during the last night and already has a delimited perimeter. The Minister of the Presidency, Antonio Sanz, has confirmed that the control lines have been consolidated and secured, although he has called for "maximum prudence" because the flames still show activity. The fire has devastated around 38,000 hectares.

In this context, Moreno has also confirmed that he has received a call from King Felipe VI to inquire about the situation caused by the earthquake in Granada and about the evolution of the Niebla fire. The Andalusian president has thanked the Royal House, and especially the monarch, for their support to the mayors of the affected areas.

The fire situation continues to be especially complicated in other parts of the country. In Peñas de Riglos, Huesca, the flames have destroyed more than 15,000 hectares, although the emergency services have managed to contain their advance towards urban areas. Towns such as Centenero and Santa Cruz de la Serós are now out of danger, after some particularly difficult hours due to the fire's proximity to the monasteries of San Juan de la Peña. More than 600 personnel and between 30 and 35 aerial units are working in the area, where the rain forecasts for this Saturday ultimately did not materialize.
