The Andalusian Popular Party has already chosen its representatives in the Senate for the new legislature. Javier Arenas, Jesús Aguirre, Francisco Javier Oblaré and Virginia Pérez will occupy four of the seats assigned to the popular group after the regional elections on May 17.
Arenas will be the only one to repeat from the previous legislature. The former president of the Andalusian PP currently serves as general secretary and deputy spokesperson for the popular group in the Senate, where he will continue to be part of the party's parliamentary core.
The main novelty will be the incorporation of Jesús Aguirre, who will leave the Presidency of the Parliament of Andalusia this week. His departure will allow Ana Mestre to lead the regional Chamber as part of the changes agreed for the beginning of the legislature.
Virginia Pérez and Francisco Javier Oblaré complete the proposal. Both were deputies in the previous Parliament, although they were left out of the lists with which the PP ran in the last elections. Their designation now returns them to the institutional front line from the Upper House.
The agreement grants a second seat to Vox
The election results gave the PP five regional senators, the PSOE three and Vox one. The government agreement reached between the popular party and the far-right contemplates that the PP cede one of its positions to Santiago Abascal's party, which will thus have two representatives.
The ceded seat will go to María Auxiliadora Pastor Pérez-Angulo, a lawyer and director since April of the Municipal Office for Maternity Care of the Seville City Council. Her name has been formally included by the popular group itself as the fifth candidate in its quota to comply with what was agreed with Vox.
The other far-right representative will be Álvaro Zancajo, national communication coordinator for Vox and member of the Board of Directors of Radio Televisión de Andalucía. His party has directly registered his candidacy with the Parliament.
Zancajo arrives at the Senate while the Andalusian Office against Fraud and Corruption investigates a possible incompatibility between his responsibilities within Vox and his position on the RTVA's administrative body, which requires exclusive dedication.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Adelante Andalucía. The party maintains that Zancajo performs communication tasks for Abascal while receiving public remuneration as a board member of the Andalusian radio and television. The journalist has declared before Parliament that he is not affected by any cause of incompatibility.
His new status as senator will also require resolving his continuity on the RTVA board. Zancajo joined Vox in 2022, during the regional campaign, and since 2024 has held a position created by Abascal to direct the party's national communication.
The nine senators by autonomous appointment will be elected this Thursday, July 23, in the first plenary session of the Andalusian Parliament after the investiture. The PP will present Arenas, Aguirre, Pérez, and Oblaré, in addition to the candidate ceded to Vox, while the ultra party will also submit Zancajo's appointment to a vote.
