The candidate of Coalición Canaria (CC) for Congress for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cristina Valido, has announced that she will not support a Government of the Popular Party (PP) if the far-right, Vox is part of the Executive, during a press conference to review the party's work in the last legislature.

Valido explained that Vox's proposals clash with the interests of Canary Islands, especially due to its stance on the autonomy of the communities and the archipelago's own competencies. The candidate believes that Santiago Abascal's party's proposals could reduce the Canary Islands' capacity to make decisions on its own affairs.

The leader also recalled that the Secretary General of CC and President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, had already expressed his rejection of participating in a central Government with Vox. However, Valido clarified that the definitive conditions for negotiating possible support will be decided after the general elections on November 29, when the composition of Congress is known.

Coalición Canaria rejects a PP Government with Vox due to their differences on the autonomy of the Canary Islands

Cristina Valido has argued that Vox does not sufficiently recognize the particularities of the Canary Islands, including its Statute of Autonomy and its status as an outermost region of the European Union. This latter characteristic refers to its geographical distance from the European continent and justifies certain specific support measures.

Among the disagreements pointed out by the candidate are migration policy, aid to La Palma after the volcanic eruption, and measures aimed at compensating for the economic and geographical difficulties of the islands. According to Valido, Vox's proposals could favor greater centralization of the State, meaning that decisions would be more concentrated in the central Government and the scope of action of the autonomous communities would be reduced.

The candidate insisted that Coalición Canaria wants to maintain its ability to negotiate concrete measures with the future Government, whether it be from the PP or other parties. The objective, she argued, is for the commitments made with the archipelago to be fulfilled and its specific needs to be addressed.

CC's support for Feijóo in 2023 and municipal pacts with Vox

The position announced by Valido contrasts with the decision of Coalición Canaria in September 2023, when the deputy voted in favor of the investiture of Alberto Núñez Feijóo. The PP candidate did not get the necessary support to become president of the Government, in an attempt in which he also had the votes of Vox.

In addition, Coalición Canaria has reached municipal agreements with the PP and Vox in localities of the archipelago. These pacts have been justified by the nationalist formation due to the circumstances of each town council, although now Valido distinguishes these local agreements from a possible Government of Spain in which Vox has ministers.

Looking ahead to the next elections, the candidate has indicated that CC will establish its conditions when the election results and the distribution of seats are known. The formation aspires to have enough representation in Congress to defend its demands and negotiate with the party that manages to form a Government.

Therefore, the announcement does not imply a rejection of any agreement with the PP, but a specific condition: Coalición Canaria will not support a national Executive of the popular party if Vox becomes part of it.
