The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, has raised the tone in a speech in which he combines warnings about the social climate and direct criticism of different fronts. Regarding the migratory debate, he has accused Vox of using a “populist rhetoric” based on confrontation, warning that “today the immigrant is singled out, but tomorrow anyone else can be singled out”. Against this, he has defended that politics cannot be built “at the cost of being worse people”, claiming a Spain based on coexistence and not on confrontation.
In that sense, Page has been especially harsh with the proposals of independentism on immigration, equating them in part to Vox's discourse. He has flatly rejected that the autonomous communities can assume powers in immigration matters, stressing that it is an exclusive matter of the State. In his opinion, introducing requirements such as language to condition rights can lead to a “segregation by identity”, whether cultural or linguistic, something he considers incompatible both with the Constitution and with the cohesion of the country. However, he has clarified that co-official languages are a “wealth” that should serve to unite, not to divide.
In parallel, he has spoken about the caso Kitchen, putting the focus on the contradictions between the statements of María Dolores de Cospedal and her closest circle. Without making categorical statements, he has pointed out that “everyone knows what happened” and that the testimony of Cospedal's chief of staff is especially revealing. For Page, any attempt to obstruct judicial investigations or cover up corruption cases represents a “tremendous indecency” that undermines trust in institutions.
Finally, the Castilian-Manchegan president has wanted to place the focus on social advances, especially in the fight against sexist violence. He has recognized that today there is greater awareness and social rejection, but he has warned that attitudes that trivialize the problem still persist, in some cases from extreme positions. In this sense, he has defended the importance of education in values such as equality, respect, and tolerance, underlining that this is the key ground for consolidating a more just society in the future.
