The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, visited this Saturday morning the Command Center of the forest fire declared on Friday in La Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona), from where he followed the evolution of a fire that has already devastated some 2,400 hectares of forest mass.
During his appearance before the media, Illa pointed out that the fire remains active and warned that its propagation capacity could reach 7,000 hectares. He also warned that, "in the worst-case scenario", the flames could end up affecting the entire protected natural area of Les Gavarres, which has an approximate surface area of 30,000 hectares. As a preventive measure, the closure of this natural environment has been decreed.
The head of the Catalan Executive defined the fire as "worrying" and highlighted the extensive deployment to combat it. Around 440 members of the Bombers de la Generalitat are participating in the extinction efforts, a figure that, as he recalled, is equivalent to the total number of on-duty firefighters usually present in Catalonia during an ordinary day. Nearly a hundred members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have also joined this operation.
For his part, the head of the Bombers de la Generalitat, David Borrell, reported that during the early hours of the morning, approximately 70% of the right flank had been stabilized. As he explained, before the arrival of the sea breeze wind expected at noon, the personnel have a window of opportunity to complete the closure of that sector, considered a priority in the extinction strategy.
Meanwhile, the confinement measures decreed in the affected areas will remain active until emergency officials re-evaluate the situation in the afternoon, once the expected wind change occurs.
