Amaar, a 57-year-old Algerian migrant, died this Friday in the settlement built next to Trampolín beach, in Ceuta. The man collapsed around 2:30 p.m. near the shower area, in the vicinity of the old Guano factory.
The shouts of those next to him alerted to what had happened. Several activists from a humanitarian organization began to perform resuscitation maneuvers until the arrival of an ambulance. Paramedics continued trying to recover his vital signs, but finally certified his death.
The exact cause must be established by autopsy. Official sources have reported that the first indications point to a sudden heart attack, although this hypothesis is still pending confirmation. One of his companions explained that Amaar had health problems and had already felt unwell during the morning.
About a hundred people remained around while emergency teams tried to save him. When the body was covered, his companions spontaneously began a Muslim prayer that lasted about five minutes. The agents deployed at the scene remained on the sidelines and the prayer proceeded without interruptions.
A beach turned into a refuge
Amaar lived in one of the settlements that emerged after the entries from Morocco recorded at the end of July. The lack of spaces forced thousands of people to remain in Trampolín and Benítez, where they built shacks with reeds, cardboard, wood, and fabrics to protect themselves from the sun and sleep.
The beach has ended up functioning as a small improvised village. Among the tents and shelters, kitchens, clothing and food stalls, prayer spaces, and basic showers have been installed. Many people still sleep on cardboard or directly on the ground, exposed to very deficient hygienic and sanitary conditions.
The Government had announced in August the initial creation of 1,500 places in four locations, in addition to an emergency fund of 6.5 million euros to support the attention of the Red Cross. The organization has distributed thousands of food kits and has provided socio-health assistance to more than 4,000 people since the beginning of the crisis.
Last week, 1,700 migrants were transferred from Trampolín and Benítez to the temporary camp set up in the port. The spaces filled up in a few hours and those who were left out returned to the beaches. Estimates made after the operation still placed between 2,800 and 3,000 people in both settlements.
Amaar has died in one of those spaces that remain inhabited while the administrations look for new accommodations. After covering his body, his companions bid him farewell on the same beach with a collective prayer.
