The indefinite strike that since last May 11 had kept Valencian public education in tension has entered a new stage. Teachers have decided to temporarily suspend the stoppages, although without renouncing their demands or the mobilizations that have marked recent weeks.
The measure, defined by the organizers as a "strategic interruption," allows the strike to be halted without formally calling it off. In this way, teachers will be able to continue with the planned protest actions and, if negotiations do not advance, reactivate the stoppage immediately and without the need for new procedures.
The decision was adopted after an online consultation in which more than 30,000 teachers participated, out of the nearly 78,000 who make up the educational system of the Valencian Community. The result will be transferred this Thursday to the Department of Education during a new meeting between the Administration and the trade union organizations.
The meeting comes at a key moment for the conflict. Workers' representatives must communicate whether they accept or reject the latest proposal presented by the department headed by Carmen Ortí, in an attempt to bring positions closer and unblock the negotiation that has been open for months.
Precisely, the negotiating day has been marked by a discrepancy over the signing of partial agreements. "The dynamic of the table is that partial agreement is signed by partial agreement," defended the counselor to close the debate raised by several unions, who proposed reviewing all points first before proceeding to the signatures. Finally, the signing will be carried out in stages, starting with the agreement on bureaucratic simplification, from which the National Association of Teaching Professionals (ANPE) has decided to distance itself, even forcing the document to be modified and reprinted before its validation.
A month ago, the strike began after the Department of Education presented the unions with a document that teachers' representatives consider insufficient to reach an agreement. The Valencian Government's proposal did not include the salary increase demanded by teachers, one of the main demands that gave rise to the conflict and the start of the indefinite strike.
