Spain prepares for the autumn time change, which marks the end of daylight saving time and the entry into winter time. As happens every year in October, clocks must be set back during the early morning of the last Sunday of the month, a modification that affects daily schedules and the distribution of daylight hours.

The 2026 time change will take place on Sunday, October 25. Although electronic devices usually update automatically, analog clocks and some appliances will need to be adjusted manually to show the correct time.

When is the time change in Spain in 2026?

The change to winter time will occur in the early morning of Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 October. In peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands, when the clock strikes 03:00, it must be set back to 02:00. In Canary Islands, the change will be at 02:00, which will become 01:00.

The date follows the rule that establishes the end of daylight saving time for the last Sunday of October. The official calendar for 2026 records this day as the moment when daylight saving time ends in Spain.

Do we sleep an hour more or an hour less?

With the change to winter time, citizens will be able to sleep an hour more if they maintain their usual schedules. By setting the clock back, the early morning will have an additional hour, unlike what happens in spring, when the clock is set forward and an hour is lost.

However, this adjustment also modifies daily routines. During the following days, some people may notice changes in sleep or their rest schedules as they adapt to the new time.

To facilitate adaptation, it can be helpful to maintain a regular sleep routine, avoid overly heavy dinners, and reduce screen time before bed.

How does the time change affect light and daily routine?

One of the most visible effects of winter time is that it will dawn and get dark earlier according to the clock. Mornings will have more light early on, while afternoons will lose hours of daylight, something that will be especially noticeable during the autumn and winter months.

This change can influence commutes to work or school, outdoor activities, and the organization of leisure time. Therefore, it is advisable to take into account the reduced afternoon light when planning trips and activities outside the home. Although the time change is repeated every year, its possible elimination continues to be a subject of debate in Europe. The proposal to abolish seasonal changes has not been approved, so Spain maintains the current system.
