The political confrontation surrounding the genocide in Gaza and the figure of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has added a new episode in the United States. The Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has publicly demanded that the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Israeli leader be executed, a stance that contrasts with the line maintained by the US Administration and represents a new challenge to the positions defended by Donald Trump.

Through a video published this Tuesday on his social networks, Mamdani assured that Netanyahu "is not welcome" in New York and asked federal authorities to act if the Israeli leader visits the city, something common during the celebration of the United Nations General Assembly. The mayor explained that his team has analyzed the existing legal possibilities and has concluded that the City Council lacks the authority to execute an order issued by the ICC on its own.

A post shared by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@nycmayor)

In the recording, disseminated under the title "Netanyahu is a war criminal", the New York mayor stated that it is "evident" that he does not have legal authority to carry out the arrest. However, he added that "the federal government does have it, and I ask them to join the ICC and execute this order."

The ICC issued that order in November 2024, a decision that has been rejected by Israel and is also not recognized by the United States. Despite this, the New York mayor believes that Washington should collaborate with the international court and enforce the measure if Netanyahu enters US territory.
