The latest data from the Colombia earthquake put the total number of dead at 240 and more than 2,000 injured: 164 Spaniards missing

The toll from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Colombia this Monday has grown again. At least 240 people have died, according to counts reported by authorities in the most affected regions, while the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management has placed the number of injured above 2,000.

The figures remain provisional as emergency teams access new areas and search for survivors among the collapsed buildings. Cali and Pereira concentrate a good part of the victims, although deaths and serious damage have also been registered in other municipalities of Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Chocó, Caldas, and Quindío.

In Cali, the Unified Command Post has reported 95 deaths and 949 injured. City authorities have also received 239 reports of trapped people and have confirmed the rescue of 86 survivors. In Risaralda, the regional toll approaches 90 deaths.

Regarding Spanish citizens present in Colombia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has announced that 164 people have not yet been contacted. The minister clarified that, so far, there is no record of Spanish citizens deceased or injured and has asked those in the country to report their situation as soon as possible.

The General Consulate of Spain in Bogotá works in coordination with the Embassy and with the honorary consulates in the affected areas to locate these people and determine if any Spanish citizen is among the victims. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that consular services remain fully mobilized and are continuously monitoring the emergency.

Rescues continue in Cali and Pereira

Emergency teams have worked throughout the night with heavy machinery, specialized dogs, and hand tools to try to reach people who remain under the rubble. Efforts are especially concentrated in Cali and the metropolitan area of Pereira, where dozens of structures have suffered total or partial collapses.

The balances collected by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs point to almost 5,000 damaged homes, dozens of collapsed buildings and hundreds of destroyed residences. Hospitals, educational centers, airports and transport networks have also suffered damage, while several points in the affected areas continue to have problems with electricity, water and communications.

The earthquake occurred this Monday at 07:34, 12:34 GMT, and had its epicenter near San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, on the Colombian Pacific coast. The first data from the Colombian Geological Survey placed the focus at about 82 kilometers deep.

The movement was felt with intensity in Bogotá, Cali, Popayán, Manizales, Armenia, Pereira and Medellín, in addition to reaching areas of Ecuador and Panama. The Colombian Geological Survey has registered dozens of aftershocks, the largest of magnitude 4.8, and maintains active monitoring of seismic activity.

Royal House expresses its solidarity

The Spanish Royal House has expressed its solidarity with the Colombian people through its official X account. "We want to convey to the Colombian people our deep solidarity and all our support in these difficult times. We wholeheartedly accompany those who have lost a loved one and all those affected by the earthquake," they stated on the social network.

Likewise, the message continued: "Our thoughts are also with the missing persons, among them 164 Spaniards who have not yet been located, with the wish that all of them can be found as soon as possible."
