A former civil guard convicted of gender violence murders his ex-partner, also an agent, in Llanes

A 50-year-old Civil Guard agent was murdered this Wednesday by her ex-partner inside the barracks of Llanes, in Asturias. The victim was on duty when the aggressor accessed the premises shortly before 1:30 p.m. and fired several shots at her.

The man, 49 years old and also a former member of the Armed Institute, tried to leave the barracks after the attack. A lieutenant who came to the agent's aid tried to stop him and was shot in the leg when the aggressor opened fire again.

Other civil guards present at the facilities repelled the shots and tried to prevent his escape. The attacker was seriously wounded and died around 3:30 p.m. while receiving medical assistance inside a mobile ICU. The lieutenant was transferred to the hospital, where he remains stable.

The victim was in the process of divorce and was included in the VioGén system due to previous complaints of ill-treatment. The couple had three children together, an 18-year-old son and twin daughters around 14, according to sources close to the investigation.

The Government Delegation against Gender Violence has announced that it is gathering information about the murder to incorporate it, if its sexist nature is officially confirmed, into the state statistics.

Convicted of gender violence and without a regulation weapon

The aggressor had been convicted by a final judgment for a crime of gender violence at least two years prior. The Civil Guard also opened a disciplinary file against him which ended with his expulsion from the force, a resolution that had been notified to him in recent days.

His last assignment had been in the Command of Zamora, although he had previously worked in Llanes and was familiar with the facilities. The man no longer had a regulation weapon and was still prohibited from carrying weapons as a consequence of his record of gender violence.

Investigation sources maintain that he would have obtained the pistol used in the crime within the barracks itself. Investigators will have to determine if he stole it from a locker or snatched it from another agent before locating his ex-partner.

The monitoring by means of an anti-abuser bracelet was no longer in force, although the victim remained within the VioGén system. The woman had also gone in 2019 to the Llanes Women's Advisory Center, which provides specialized legal and psychological assistance to victims of gender violence.

A team from the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has traveled to Llanes to reconstruct the aggressor's route, clarify how he obtained the weapon, and take statements from the agents who witnessed the attack. They will also have to analyze the protection measures that were still active and the circumstances under which he was able to access the barracks.

Unión de Guardias Civiles has extended its condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the victim. The association has condemned "with the utmost firmness any form of gender violence" and has wished a speedy recovery to the agent who was injured while trying to help his colleague.

Official statistics currently count 33 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners during 2026 and 1,374 since records began in 2003. The crime in Llanes was still pending confirmation by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence.
