The Government intensifies the fight against sexist violence: Equality convenes a crisis committee after the latest murders of women

Male chauvinist violence is once again at the center of current events after the latest murders of women recorded in different parts of the country. Given the seriousness of the events, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence has called a crisis committee for next July 28 with the aim of examining the most recent cases and reinforcing the institutional monitoring of this scourge that continues to leave victims in Spain.

The decision comes after several crimes have been reported in recent hours that are being investigated as possible cases of gender violence. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, reacted this Tuesday through his social networks after the confirmation of three sexist murders in Madrid, Malaga and Toledo. “We are facing an unbearable tragedy that hits us as a society and that we cannot normalize or accept. Never,” said the head of the Executive, who called for “more unity, firmness and commitment from all of society” to combat this violence. Sánchez also recalled the importance of reporting and appealed to victims and their environment to call 016.

The investigations opened in recent days reflect the dimension of the problem. In Almoradí (Alicante), the Civil Guard is investigating the death of a 56-year-old woman found lifeless in her home. Agents arrested her 61-year-old husband, while the Government Delegation against Gender Violence gathers information to clarify the circumstances of the case. Hours later, in Alameda de la Sagra (Toledo), another woman allegedly died at the hands of her partner after a stabbing. The alleged aggressor was arrested and the Judicial Police took over the investigation.

Added to these events is the case registered in Benahavís (Málaga), where a woman was found dead with signs of violence in a home. Simultaneously, the Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating another episode that occurred in Barcelona related to a man who died after being wounded by a knife and who had a restraining order against a woman. Although the circumstances of this last case continue under investigation, the events have once again focused on the need to strengthen prevention, the protection of victims, and the institutional response to sexist violence.

The extraordinary meeting called by Equality will serve to evaluate the response of administrations to these cases and analyze possible additional measures. Meanwhile, authorities insist that the eradication of gender violence requires the involvement of all society to prevent further murders of women simply for being women.
