The alternative left has practically resolved the name with which it wants to face the next general elections, but it is still looking for the person capable of turning it into more than just a new brand. Movimiento Sumar, Izquierda Unida, Más Madrid and Comuns have chosen 'Frente Amplio' (Broad Front) to leave behind Sumar's electoral stage, pending official presentation and the finalization of some details about its graphic identity and internal functioning.
The great unknown remains the leadership. The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, had an advantage after Yolanda Díaz refused to repeat as a candidate and Pablo Bustinduy ruled out taking on that role. However, Ada Colau's name has gained strength in recent days and is beginning to alter the plans that the leaderships of the four parties were working with.
Internal sources from the space consulted by 'ElConstitucional.es' assure that Colau's proposal is being well-received among mid-level officials and leaders without government responsibilities. They consider that she better represents the transformative left, has a recognizable trajectory, and can present herself to the electorate as a leader with her own experience, without being solely linked to the continuity of the current Executive.
The same sources maintain that Urtasun's option still generates doubts among the parties that must make the decision. The Minister of Culture has avoided ruling himself out and assures that he will be in the "fight", although his possible candidacy has not yet achieved enough internal momentum to close the debate. From his circle, they have even downplayed in recent days the possibility of him ending up leading the entire space.
Colau contributed this Friday to keeping the race open. The former mayor of Barcelona has acknowledged that she has been proposed to return to the front line and has shown herself willing to participate if negotiations lead to "a truly broad front", with more organizations, new ways of functioning, and a "brave and exciting" proposal.
"If the conversations between parties manage to be generous and advance in that direction, of course I will feel responsible for helping in whatever way I can to prevent fascism from governing in Spain," she stated. Colau insists that she is not a candidate right now, but her response represents a change from the much more emphatic refusal she maintained before the summer.
Colau reappears as the bridge with Podemos
The main strength that her defenders attribute to Colau lies in her ability to reopen the conversation with Podemos without getting trapped in the confrontation that broke the space after the 2023 elections. The former mayor maintains a good relationship with Irene Montero, has publicly defended the need to unite the different lefts, and shares with the purple leader a good part of the diagnosis on housing, military spending, and the advance of the far-right.
Sources consulted by this newspaper believe that Colau could function as a bridge between the future 'Frente Amplio' and Podemos, a much more difficult possibility with other candidates. Among the scenarios beginning to circulate is a tandem with Colau as number one for Barcelona and Irene Montero heading the Madrid list. This is still an internal hypothesis, without agreement between the parties or a closed negotiation on the candidacies.
The Podemos leader has already announced that she wants to run in the general elections and proposes open primaries to all people and organizations of the left. In an interview published this Friday by '20minutos', Montero has asked to break out of the “eternal loop of one says and the other responds” and has defended a process in which “everyone who wants to change the system” can participate.
The formula divides the new space. IU has been receptive, while Comuns maintains a more open position than Más Madrid and Movimiento Sumar, who prefer to first reach an agreement between organizations. Podemos believes that primaries would allow for the election of leadership without another negotiated distribution among leaderships and has already invited Urtasun himself to compete if he wants to head the candidacy.
Colau can offer a different way out of that clash. Her career began in the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH), she governed Barcelona for eight years, and she maintains her own political profile outside of Sumar's state structures. She also carries strong rejection among the right and part of the electorate, but she has a degree of recognition and a capacity for mobilization that other names currently being considered do not have.
Her public return has also occurred around housing, the issue that the future 'Frente Amplio' wants to make the core of its program. Colau participated this week in a protest against an eviction in Barcelona and after Maricarmen's launch, she demanded strong measures against investment funds. Her warning that the Comuns should consider leaving the Government if the PSOE continued to block these policies made part of the coalition uncomfortable, although it also brought the former mayor back to the center of the political debate.
A candidacy that still needs to prove its breadth
The name 'Frente Amplio' seeks to overcome one of the problems that accompanied the 2023 coalition. No organization lends its acronym to the whole nor can it present the project as an extension of its own party. The name links with the slogan 'Un paso al frente' (A step forward), used since February by the four formations, and is reminiscent of left-wing alliances built in countries like Uruguay and Chile.
Movimiento Sumar, IU, Más Madrid and Comuns also want to incorporate Compromís, Chunta Aragonesista, Més per Mallorca and other territorial forces. Several of them accept negotiating joint candidacies in their communities, although they refuse to integrate into a permanent state structure or cede their political autonomy.
Podemos remains the piece that will determine if the project truly lives up to its chosen name. Ione Belarra's formation is outside formal conversations and demands that the leadership election go through the polls. Fragmentation can have an especially high cost in small and medium provinces, where two candidacies below the effective representation threshold would allow thousands of votes to remain without a seat.
According to the latest 40dB survey, Sumar gathers 5.7% of voting intention and Podemos 2.8%. Neither of the two spaces is going through a moment separately that allows ignoring the other. Montero's candidacy has forced the parties of the future 'Frente Amplio' to accelerate a decision they had been postponing for months.
The sources consulted by 'ElConstitucional.es' also appreciate a difference within the previous leadership core. Yolanda Díaz avoids commenting on the replacement and is not publicly intervening in the election, while Pablo Iglesias actively participates in the debate and has already questioned Urtasun's ability to become the next candidate.
The four parties plan to present the brand, the operating model, and the name of their lead candidate in the coming weeks. Urtasun remains in the race, Montero has already launched her candidacy, and Colau has set a condition before deciding whether to take the step: that the 'Broad Front' be truly broad.
