The Government Delegation defends the operation
The Government Delegation in Madrid has, for its part, defended the eviction carried out this morning by the National Police, in coordination with the Municipal Police of Madrid, and has assured that it was a measure of "last resort", adopted after a "gradual action process".
According to the text released by the Delegation, the Government initially protected the fundamental right of assembly due to a "common protest purpose", but adds that this right "is not unlimited" and that, after more than a month of protests, a "change in the circumstances and nature of the encampment" was observed.
The institution maintains that the main participating organizations withdrew and that a large number of overnight stays already corresponded to "homeless people" and "vulnerable groups", a situation that, together with the "existence of various allegedly criminal acts and incidents that occurred inside or in the immediate vicinity of the encampment", reported by the Superior Police Headquarters of Madrid, generated a "concrete danger for people and property".
Ayuso accuses Sánchez of consenting to the damage
The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, also criticized this Tuesday that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, had "consented" to the dirt and damage for 38 days in the encampment, which was set up to defend the right to housing in Puerta del Sol and was evicted this morning.
"This is what Pedro Sánchez has consented to for 38 days in the square of all Spaniards. Either communism or freedom," the regional leader expressed on her social networks, along with photographs showing abandoned belongings on the public road and removed tents.
Ayuso estimated the losses derived from the encampment at more than 25 million euros and warned of the "representational damage" that, in her opinion, it was causing. In addition, she assured that in recent weeks the protest was managed by a group with "pro-Palestinian terrorist backgrounds".
Two arrested and 334 campers evicted
The eviction of the 26S Encampment resulted in two people arrested for disobedience and resistance, within the framework of an operation carried out during the early hours of this Tuesday against the 334 campers who remained in Puerta del Sol.
From the Government Delegation in Madrid they insist that the intervention occurred after a gradual process and when, according to their version, the protest had already lost its initial protest character and had become a situation of public disorder.
