The counselor of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration of the Community of Madrid, Miguel Ángel García Martín, described this Wednesday as "political" the strike that has begun in the six public universities of the region, on a day in which the centers have joined the indefinite strike called in the Madrid university sphere.

As he explained, the mobilization is due to the "economic asphyxiation" that they denounce they suffer from the regional Government, and due to the increase in "repression" on the campuses.

During the press conference after the Governing Council, García Martín insisted that the universities have funding that he considers "historic", and rejected that the conflict has its origin in a lack of resources.

The counselor pointed out that the regional Executive has spoken "with each and every one" of the rectors of the Community of Madrid, with whom it reached a multi-year financing agreement worth 14,800 million euros, a pact that, he said, had the support of "absolutely all universities".

García Martín also focused on the accounts planned for the coming years, and stated that the 2027 budget shows a significant increase. Specifically, he explained that it reaches 1,420 million euros, which, he indicated, represents "a growth of 14.6 million euros".

On that basis, the counselor defended that the available data "perfectly respond to the fact that this is a political strike and logically it is not a strike for financing", and reiterated that the financing of Madrid universities is "at historic highs".
