The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has cleared up one of the main unknowns of his electoral lists for November 29. Deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo will occupy the second position on the list for Congress for Madrid, immediately behind the president of the PP, while Borja Sémper will repeat as number three.
The election brings together two leaders with different trajectories and political profiles in the top positions of the Madrid list. A circumstance that the party itself claims as part of its electoral project.
In statements sent to 'ElConstitucional.es', PP sources defend that Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo and Borja Sémper represent different ways of understanding Spain and recall that both have gone through different stages within the party.
Far from presenting this diversity as a problem, the popular party maintains that it constitutes one of the features they want to highlight for the upcoming general elections.
The PP defends the diversity of profiles: "We are not the PSOE"
The sources consulted by 'ElConstitucional.es' claim the party's ability to integrate different political sensibilities under Feijóo's leadership. "The Popular Party is a broad project that accommodates all sensibilities. We are not the PSOE. We are an open formation where nuances and accents do not bother anyone, but rather enrich everyone."
With this argument, the PP responds to possible interpretations of the differences between Álvarez de Toledo and Sémper, who will share a candidacy despite their different political trajectories. The popular leadership also places Feijóo as the leader capable of bringing these positions together in the same project. "Differences in the PP are not fought, they are respected. And Feijóo is a candidate in whom Spaniards of different signs and conditions can converge."
The same sources insist that the composition of the lists responds to this desire to represent a broad electorate. "Therefore, we are very proud that the people who accompany the president represent different profiles of diverse citizens."
Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo rises from sixth to second place
The designation of Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo represents a significant promotion compared to the previous general elections. In July 2023, the current deputy spokesperson for the Popular Group in Congress held the sixth position on the Madrid candidacy list. Now she will become number two to Feijóo on one of the most politically visible lists for the November 29 elections.
Her name had been circulating for days among possible candidates to fill that position. In fact, the president of the PP himself had dropped several hints about her selection during an interview granted on Tuesday to esRadio.
