The Audiencia Nacional has sentenced Francisco Granados to two and a half years in prison in his first major corruption trial for the Púnica case. The court considers the former general secretary of the PP of Madrid and former counselor of Esperanza Aguirre guilty of fraud and prevarication for the rigging of public contracts linked to festivities and events awarded to Waiter Music.

The sentence also imposes on Granados eight and a half years of disqualification from public employment or office. The piece focused on awards between 2004 and 2013 in favor of the company of businessman José Luis Huerta, now deceased, in Madrid municipalities governed by the PP and in acts related to entities of the Community of Madrid. The court maintains that Granados maintained a continuous capacity for influence over the bodies that decided the contracts and that he received benefits in kind paid for by the businessman.

The Audiencia also condemns David Erguido, former councilor of Algete and subsequently PP senator and regional deputy in Madrid, to two years in prison. The same penalty falls on several former popular municipal officials from Valdemoro, Ciempozuelos and Moraleja de Enmedio. In contrast, the two former mayors of Móstoles accused in this piece, Daniel Ortiz and Esteban Parro, are acquitted.

The Púnica case erupted in 2014 and was fragmented into more than a dozen lines of investigation into municipal and regional corruption in Madrid. Granados was already sentenced in 2017 to two years in prison for receiving a tip-off from a civil guard about the investigations. This new resolution comes while the former popular leader still has other pieces of the macro-summary pending, including that related to alleged irregular awards of public land and infrastructure in the Community of Madrid.
