The judge Juan Carlos Peinado has ruled to carry out the prosecution of Begoña Gómez, for considering four crimes: influence peddling, embezzlement, misappropriation and corruption in business. In this regard, the Government is criticizing the resolution of the magistrate while in the Popular Party they consider that they are lynching Peinado and “sending a message of fear” towards Justice.
When the ruling was announced, the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, criticized the decision alleging that it had “embarrassed many judges”, a statement that has generated multiple criticisms for him.
In this regard, Bolaños, in Wednesday's control session in the Congress of Deputies, has defended his right to denounce “any injustice”. Given this, the PP spokesperson in Congress, Ester Muñoz, has reproached him for having “crossed the limits of any democrat” for attacking “a judge with names and surnames” and has described his criticisms as “shameful”.
Likewise, he has stressed: “Judge Peinado is their excuse. If someone dares to investigate the Government, this is what will happen to them. A personal and professional lynching. They are sending a message of fear”.
Nevertheless, the one from Justice has reproached him/her that those on the “right” coexist naturally with injustice” and that he/she has reiterated that he/she is going to “denounce any injustice he/she sees”.
“To criticize a judicial resolution with legal arguments does not affect judicial independence. To appeal an unjust resolution so that it is corrected, does not affect judicial independence,” Bolaños has sentenced.
The Government defends the innocence of Begoña Gómez
The Spanish Executive has come out in defense of the wife of the Prime Minister, Begoña Gómez, after Judge Peinado's order. Thus, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has stated that he has read Peinado's order of “39 pages” and has defended Gómez, assuring that he does not know what she is being accused of. "I have practiced law for 20 years as a lawyer in Courts and there are things I cannot understand and I am a jurist. I still don't understand what Begoña Gómez is being accused of," he expressed.
Along the same lines, the Government spokesperson, Elma Saiz, has referred to the matter, stating: “I believe in the innocence of Begoña Gómez. She is a woman with an impeccable career. Opposite there is a writ that, in my eyes as a jurist, has paragraphs that are unprecedented and go beyond the legal”.
The President of the Government, who is currently on his trip in China, regarding questions about this matter, has appeared quite calm assuring that “as I am convinced that time will put everything and everyone in their place, I don't have to say anything else”, the head of the Executive has stated.
