The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, assured this Monday that he will get “fully involved” in the campaign for the general elections called for November 29, and he will do so, as he explained, not out of mere internal party discipline, but out of an “ethical and democratic commitment to Spain”.
Moreno made these statements during his speech at the Diálogos Sur meeting-colloquium, organized by Diario Sur in Malaga, after the announcement by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, about the election call. In that forum, the Andalusian leader defended that what happens in Andalusia, a community that contributes the largest number of seats to the Congress of Deputies, will “condition” the result in Spain as a whole.
Andalusia, a key piece in the national result
The president of the Junta de Andalucía stressed that Andalusian society has already expressed its preference for the Partido Popular in the last five electoral appointments and expressed confidence that, for the elections on November 29, that support will be even more “strong”. In that context, he insisted that the elections are decisive for the future of Spanish institutions and that, therefore, he considers it necessary to get fully involved in the campaign.
“I believe that these elections are key for the future and Spanish institutions. And my responsibility as a political leader is to get fully involved and I will do so,” said Juanma Moreno, who stressed that his participation in the campaign is not a cyclical issue, but a political and democratic obligation.
Rules out moving to Madrid
Asked if he would move to Madrid if the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, reached Moncloa, Juanma Moreno replied, jokingly, that he does not see it “as attractive” for him to do that, after being asked if Feijóo tells him “come, I'll leave everything”. He then made it clear that he maintains his commitment to Andalusia, renewed, he said, barely three months ago, and that this commitment is one of permanence.
“I have a commitment to Andalusia that I renewed barely three months ago and that commitment is one of permanence; I have a legislature ahead, I have many things to do and I believe that I can help this national project and Spain from Andalusia and Andalusia can benefit if Feijóo is president,” said the president of the Junta.
Moreno has also wanted to make it clear that he will demand from a potential PP government the same that he has demanded from Pedro Sánchez's Executive, and has warned that, if Andalusia obtains a decisive result in the elections on November 29, he will demand that this weight translates into a balanced investment for the community.
Prudence in the face of the electoral scenario
The Andalusian leader has appealed for prudence and warned that it is not advisable to take anything for granted prematurely. "I don't like to sell the bear's skin before hunting it, and even less so with Sánchez," he indicated, before adding that "one must be very prudent and not take anything for granted."
Along these lines, Juanma Moreno has insisted that all elections must be worked until the end, because excessive confidence can be detrimental. "All elections must be fought and all must be worked until the end because otherwise, confidence does us a lot of harm, and that already happened to us in 2023," he concluded.
