The Catalan pro-independence party, has confirmed this Thursday its spokesperson in Congress, Míriam Nogueras, as a candidate for Barcelona in the general elections on November 29, a designation with which the leader reprises the role she already played in 2023.
The decision comes in a scenario marked by the early election announced by Pedro Sánchez and after Junts has hardened its position against the Government, including its rejection of the housing decrees that the Executive brought to Congress. Carles Puigdemont's party thus faces the elections with Nogueras as one of its main voices in Madrid and with the party maintaining its strategy of asserting the role of its deputies as defenders of Catalonia's interests.
The top candidates in Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona
Along with Míriam Nogueras, deputies Marta Madrenas, Isidre Gavín, and Josep Maria Cruset will head the lists for Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona, respectively, after no other pre-candidacies were registered in any of the constituencies once the internal deadline closed.
In a statement, the party emphasized that this circumstance "reflects internal unity and broad support for the work done in Congress," and specified that, with no other aspirants, Nogueras, Madrenas, Gavín, and Cruset are automatically proclaimed as candidates, in accordance with the internal regulations and the deployment rules approved by the party's executive. These rules contemplated a consultation with the grassroots only if there was more than one aspirant per constituency.
A bloc that Junts wants to maintain in Madrid
The party also highlighted that "the four top candidates will once again lead the Junts parliamentary group in Congress, thus revalidating a team that has formed a solid bloc in defense of Catalonia's interests." Miriam Nogueras, vice-president of Junts, has been a deputy in Congress since 2016 and, since 2021, has served as spokesperson for the parliamentary group, a position she assumed after the departure of the party's former president Laura Borràs to the Parliament.
For her part, Marta Madrenas has been a deputy since 2023 and was previously mayor of Girona; Isidre Gavín also took his seat in 2023 and, previously, had been secretary of infrastructure and mobility in the Generalitat, as well as president of the Diputación de Lleida; while Josep Maria Cruset, deputy spokesperson in Congress and former mayor of Riudoms (Tarragona), arrived in the Chamber in 2023, after presiding over the Port of Tarragona for four years. After these confirmations, Junts continues the process of preparing the lists for Congress and the Senate, which will be ratified in a national council on October 17.
