The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Óscar Puente, has called for prudence and avoidance of speculation regarding the causes of the serious train accident that occurred last Sunday in Adamuz (Córdoba), which left 41 dead and more than a hundred injured. In an interview with 'eldiario.es', the minister insisted that, at this moment, “talking about the causes of the accident… is pure speculation”, warning that he will not give credibility to interpretations without a technical basis.

Puente explained that some circulating hypotheses, such as the accident being due to a specific welding problem, **do not have the backing of technicians in this initial phase** and that we are currently **“in the data collection phase,”** so no theory can be considered definitive yetIn the same vein, the minister has indicated that, although **a break or alteration in the track** has been detected, **"it cannot be known for now if that break was the cause of the derailment or a consequence of it,"** emphasizing that the technicians themselves will determine the causes of the accident.

Human error

"The track is part of a line that was renovated starting in 2021 with an investment of 700 million euros. Specifically, that section was renovated in May 2025. It underwent a geometric review and another dynamic review two months ago. In other words, it was infrastructure in perfect condition. We cannot speak of a lack of investment or maintenance. Nothing is being ruled out. I am not in a position to rule anything out or to conclude," the minister stated when asked if he ruled out the possibility of human error. As we already informed you yesterday on ElConstitucional.es, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, explained that the rail break detected by the Civil Guard is not limited to a single piece, but extends over 200 or 300 meters of track. Puente pointed out that "it is not yet known whether this fracture is a cause of the derailment or a consequence of the accident," and described the hypothesis that the incident could be due to a failure in the rail welding as "unviable."

The minister also ruled out that the accident was due to speeding or a possible human error by the driver, and recalled that the Iryo train was new and had been recently inspected, which eliminates these factors as proven causes for the moment.
